Katherine Thornton
E-CO Director & Learning Advisor

Hi, I’m Katherine. I’m from Leeds in the U.K. I’ve lived in Tottori, Kyushu, Chiba and now Osaka. I can speak Japanese and I studied French and German at University in England. Now I’m learning Chinese too. Let’s talk together about learning languages.
I enjoy swimming and hiking and love visiting new countries. I’ve visited some places in Europe and Asia, but I’ve never been to Africa or South America. I’m looking forward to seeing you in E-CO!
Joshua Yamashiro
E-CO Teacher

Greetings! My name is Joshua Yamashiro. I was born and raised in the U.S but have been living in Japan for about 10 years now. I started my teaching career in 2017 working at another university as a part of their International Studies department. In my classes, I always taught my students to think in ”practical English.” This philosophy was a part of my course objectives and output. Students focused on delivering smooth presentations and sharing their opinions in a clear, concise and conscious manner. These course outcomes really helped to develop their communication skills in English.
As a member of Toastmasters for over 15 years, public speaking and communication are my strong suits, and I want all students that come to E-CO to experience a great environment while improving their speaking and communication skills.
My hobbies include watching sumo and playing the Okinawan sanshin. I also enjoy traveling, but I prefer learning and experiencing the local culture of each prefecture that I visit – instead of just going to the usual tourist attractions.
I look forward to building great connections and enjoying communication with everyone at E-CO!
Etsuko Jones
E-CO Administrator

I work as E-CO’s supporting member. I lived for many years in England. Through that experience as the only foreigner in the village, I know that opening yourself to anyone is the first step to make your life more interesting. You will see lots of new things. This is my advice to E-CO students. I would like many students to come and have fun at E-CO and am looking forward to supporting everyone.
